Special Olympics and Best Buddies

On Thursday, April 28th the NM Special Olympics Athletes and their Best Buddies were honored at
a pep rally attended by the junior & senior classes.  They were supported by their
parents and school community; cheerleaders and the concert choir participated.  The NM Student Council
made a short video of well wishes by a number of teachers & faculty members around the
building.  Special Olympians were given standing ovations for much of the rally.  DJ Mike
Morgan provided entertainment and Assistant Principal Patricia Washburn spoke, as did the officers of our Best Buddies Chapter.  Coach Julie McIntyre addressed the crowd, discussing the history behind Special
Olympics and an overview of the day's events. (Photographs are forthcoming)

Immediately following the pep rally, the NM Student Council provided a spaghetti luncheon to all
athletes, their Best Buddies, coaches and teachers.  The NM Student Council worked very hard to
decorate the classroom and provide an outstanding meal to our Special Olympians.  They carbo-loaded just like the best of the Boston Marathoners!

The North Central Special Olympics Track & Field events were held at Eliot Field at
Fitchburg State University on Friday, April 29th.  Our athletes were sent off by the NM
community with many classmates and faculty members lining the way from the front office to
the buses.

NM Special Olympians, with their Best Buddies, participated in a variety of events including: Softball throw and Shotput, 100 Meter Dash, a 4x100 Meter Unified Event, the Motorized Wheelchair Race and the Assisted Walk Event.  Twenty Eight of NM's best participated in these events and brought home 30 gold, 21 silvers, and 13 bronze medals.  They demonstrated outstanding sportmanship and team spirit, as well as epic athleticism.  (used the word epic @Matt R's request!)

Once again, Team North Middlesex represented and made our community proud! (Photographs are forthcoming) Learn more about Special Olympics and Best Buddies at http://www.specialolympics.org/ and http://www.specialolympics.org/
